The Wanamaker Organ has been entertaining and entrancing crowds large and small since the 1904 World’s Fair.
A procession of 13 freight trains brought the organ to Philadelphia at the behest of John Wanamaker to be the centerpiece in his new department store.
On July 18th, the Obscura Society Philly will be given special access thanks to the organ’s talented and knowledgeable restoration woodworker Scott Kip. He will take us up, down, behind and through the multi-story organ where we will see and hear the organ in all its glory.
Join us for this rare and exclusive event that will surely make an organ enthusiast out of you too!
We will be offering two tours - 10 AM & 4 PM. For both, we will honor the long standing Philly tradition of meeting “At The Eagle.” From here we will proceed in the company of Scott Kip and wander within the Wanamaker Organ itself. Here we will gain an appreciation of what makes this gigantic instrument play the most gentle of songs.
Other Notes for this Adventure:
- Part of the ticket proceeds will be donated to restoration and preservation of the Wanamaker Organ
- There will be tours: 10 AM & 4 PM. Please be mindful of which one you have signed up for (noted on the ticket). Both will culminate in the daily Wanamaker Organ recital.
- We will “meet at the Eagle” in the Macy’s Philadelphia at 1300 Market Street.
-This adventure will involve maneuvering in tight space and a fair bit of climbing. Attendees should be comfortable with both.
