Head underground this Obscura Day with Trevor Mottram, founder of Southern California Exploration & Adventure (SoCalX)!
We'll be hiking about 2 miles to reach the Warlock Mine, heading up into the mountains on an old overgrown mining road and truck trail. Upon reaching the mine we'll have a chance to explore the area while talking a bit about the history of mining in the surrounding hills during the late 1800s and early 1900s. We'll find mill remains, a few concrete water tanks, and of course the main tunnel of the Warlock, which heads into the earth nearly 400 feet before hitting a collapse. Old air ducting, an ore cart track, and other relics of the operation can be found throughout.
From the Warlock, we'll move on to the Neptune and Shamrock tunnels for a little more underground exploring. The Neptune tunnel is particularly interesting as it contains two shallow cutouts where old miner's cots still remain. There's so much more to see in the area—as long as the group is up for it, we'll continue exploring!
- We'll meet at 9am in the parking lot on the North side of Interstate-8 at the State Route 79 exit to Julian. From there, we'll proceed in as few a number of vehicles as possible.
