Wine, Spirits & Stories at Historic Congressional Cemetery

End Obscura Day sipping wine and taking an evening jaunt through Historic Congressional Cemetery.

Believed to be the world's only cemetery with a dedicated LGBT section, Historic Congressional Cemetery in southeast DC is the final resting place for 65,000 souls who are buried six feet below.

Join us for an evening of wine, spirits, and stories in the cemetery that J. Edgar Hoover, Madam Mary Anne Hall, and Marion Berry all call their eternal home. At dusk, we will sip wine in the very vault where Dolley Madison once laid. Afterward, attendees will take one of two tours: "LGBT Icons" with Jeff Rollins or "Uppity Women" with Rebecca Roberts.

The "LGBT Icons" tour will feature the so-called "Gay Corner," which began in 1988 when gay rights advocate and Vietnam Veteran Leonard Matlovich—best known for being on Time Magazine's cover in his Air Force uniform with the headline "I am a homosexual"—decided to be interred at HCC. His choice inspired a generation of LGBT activists to make HCC their final resting place, and it's the future site of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit LGBT Veterans Memorial.

Rebecca Roberts' "Uppity Women" tour will highlight an array of brave and brilliant ladies—from suffragists and civil rights advocates to journalists and artists—who are now forever home in HCC.
