What We’ll Do

We’ll taste three different kinds of honey—the most obvious gift of the hive. You'll learn how honey can be used in creating medicines and nutrition supplements for humans. We’ll discuss native plants and their importance to bee and human health, sampling prepared herbal honeys and syrups. You'll also learn about what to plant in your own region. Finally, you'll create your own immune-boosting oxymel or elixir from local plants and honey to take home.

Where We’ll Be

The Hillman City Collaboratory is an incubator for social change. Located in the historic Hillman City neighborhood of Rainier Valley, the Collaboratory is a warm gathering space that supports the abundant brilliance in the neighborhood.

About Your Host

Hi. I’m Bob, a member of the Atlas Obscura community.

I fell in love with beekeeping living in a garden cottage surrounded by skyscrapers as the writer-in-residence for Seattle's Hugo House. With 12 years experience tending honey bees (at one time 150 colonies), I'm also a leader in pollinator conservation. Founder of the non-profit The Common Acre, I was co-Primary Investigator on a four-year USDA study and instigated the Flight Path and Green Line projects with Sea-Tac Airport and Seattle City Light. I'm excited to co-host this workshop with Shannon Welles of Hypha, an organization dedicated to the interchange between art and earth. Shannon is a Washington-native plant steward and has trained in Pacific Northwest ethnobotany, medicinal wildcrafting, permaculture, and earthen building. She holds an MFA in Arts Leadership.
