What We’ll Do

On this exclusive tour, we'll have an opportunity to make friends with the adorable residents of Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary. Founded in 1996 by Terry Cummings and Dave Hoerauf, the sanctuary has over 200 rescued animals, including horses, mules, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits, turkeys, alpacas, and a peacock. From Norah the chicken to Dexter the horse, each animal has a story to tell. Our tour will conclude with a picnic of vegan treats supplied by Sticky Fingers Sweets and Eats.

Where We’ll Be

We'll walk the grounds and habitats of the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, a 400-acre non-profit refuge for farm animals and wildlife. Poplar Spring's mission is to offer care, rehabilitation, and a permanent sanctuary for neglected, abused or abandoned farm animals, as well as providing a protected habitat for wildlife. A portion of this tour’s proceeds will go towards supporting the sanctuary’s continued work and growing animal family.

About Your Host
Julie
Julie

Hi. I’m Julie, and I'm a member of the Atlas Obscura community.

I've been a D.C. resident for the past eight years. I’m a lifelong animal lover and have two rescues, a 16-year-old cat Louis, and a three-year-old dog Toby. For seven years, I was an animal welfare volunteer and member with the Humane Rescue Alliance and Veg Society of DC. Whenever I travel I make it a point to visit an animal refuge or sanctuary — from parrots to lemurs I've seen it all.
