Foraging is for everyone, everywhere. Forest edibles are not the only game in town, urban foraging , done right, is fun, safe, and sustainable. Healthy, tasty hyper-local food can be gathered from the wild, whatever your "wild" is. The Foraging, Food, and Myth series uses the myth and magic associated with plants and seasons to explore the potential of the flora in your environment to improve the quality of your meals and your life.
During this 90-minute event we'll begin by breaking down misinformation and prejudice about weeds, invasives, and urban foraging, and reconsider these useful plants in terms of their potential for food in and around our own neighborhoods. In tune with the seasons, this session will focus on the flowers, roots, and berries available around the time of the event, and the myth and magic of the harvest seasons arrival. How does yarrow factor in the myth of Achilles? What do blackberries have to do with the devil, and what berry is said to protect your home from wandering souls? Here’s your chance to find out!
Your hosts Felicity and Ryley will guide you through the basic information you need to get started and demonstrate easy ways to enjoy the fruits of your own urban wild harvest. There is abundance all around you, from the weeds in your backyard to the berries just a bus ride away, at the edges of the urban environment.
Felicity Roberts is an herbalist, urban farmer, food and cocktail writer, textile artist, and passionate home cook who gets excited about discovering simple, low tech, and environmentally friendly ways to grow, gather, and prepare food. Her knowledge of Newfoundland's landscape and foods is matched by an eclectic knowledge base acquired from a decade spent hitchhiking, farming, and cooking around North America with notable stops in British Columbia, Texas, and Maine. She has been featured on NPR and is an Atlas Obscura trip guide.
Ryley Bucek is an avid forager, chef, and naturalist who is currently working on an organic farm in the maritimes after working in kitchens across Canada. They enjoy experimenting with creative ways to cook and preserve wild foods, including fermentation, smoking, and drying. They are endlessly fascinated by the ways people use plants across different cultures and bioregions. Their approach to foraging is informed by folklore and reciprocity with local ecosystems.
