What We’ll Do

Join me on a tour of the sustainable, artistic High Point Market Garden, located in West Seattle. The garden is just one part of a public housing development. You'll learn how the Pomegranate Center and Neighborhood House worked together to develop the garden and worked with community members at the High Point public housing development to design an amphitheater, pocket parks, shelters, and a community garden. We'll discuss the ups and downs of community building in the mixed-use development.

Where We’ll Be

We will visit the work created with the community of High Point, including the fence with carved initials of all our volunteers, roof terraces, benches and salvaged cedar posts cut down from the original development that were repurposed into the shelters and gateways. You will see the innovative approach that was used to build this gathering place, and how it incorporated both art and community involvement.

About Your Host

Hi. I’m Milenko, a member of the Atlas Obscura community.

I am an artist and community builder. Decades ago, as a young Slovenian, I left an art career as a member of the celebrated art collective, OHO Group, and immigrated to the United States. Believing that magic happens when art, creative thinking, and community join forces, I founded the non-profit Pomegranate Center in 1986. In the 30+ years since its founding, Pomegranate Center has helped communities around the world build more than 50 gathering places, convened hundreds of community engagement plans, and trained hundreds of people in the Pomegranate Method for community facilitation. I stepped out of the role of Executive Director in February 2017. I continue to write, present, and consult for the Pomegranate Center.
