Join Atlas Obscura and Mystery City Games for an interactive gaming event based on the incredible events of World War II's Monuments mission. Like an online escape room, you can play solo or with a team of friends to solve puzzles as you follow in the footsteps of the famous "Monuments Men." Compete against other teams to learn the history of this incredible operation, solve puzzles, and find the most artwork as you race to save valuable pieces of cultural heritage from destruction!
As the Nazi armies marched across Europe during World War II, they looted many famous works of art from across the continent, sending them back to Germany for safe-keeping. Now the year is 1944. It is becoming increasingly evident that the Nazis will lose the war in Europe, and these priceless pieces of cultural heritage are in danger of being destroyed. You and your team play members of the Allied unit tasked with saving them.
During this competitive version of Mystery City Game's interactive point-and-click adventure game, developed in partnership with the Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art, teams of 1-5 players will compete to solve five missions, with points awarded for speed, difficulty, and discovery along the way. The day of the event, you will join us on Zoom and solve a series of puzzles to win points and find the artwork before time runs out! Regular check-ins with the Game Master will keep the atmosphere competitive and give you additional tidbits about the real history of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program.
Puzzles and gameplay will take place in your web browser. For the best experience, we recommend playing on a desktop or laptop, attendance via mobile devices or tablets may vary.
Mystery City Games makes treasure hunts based on real stories from history. Their games combine the challenge of escape room puzzles with beautiful props, the thrill of exploring, and little-known stories from history.
