What We’ll Do
This experience is part of Halloweek (Oct. 26–30) at Atlas Obscura, a full five days of terrifying tales, wicked games, and creepy crafts. Via Zoom, join us as we gaze into Victorian divination mirrors, glimpse the scarier side of spelunking, unearth stories of stolen bones, and more. Find a trusty nightlight and book your tickets now, lest they disappear into the night!

Meet Tyler Thrasher. Mad chemist. Resistance botanist. Crystal grower. Artistic activist. These are only a few of the titles I just came up with to describe one of the most fascinating and fascinated people you'll ever meet. For decades, Tyler has been following his fascinations into exciting new realms of curiosity, whether he's experimenting with geology, revolutionizing taxidermy, or inventing a new way to catalog plants. Now we're inviting you to join us (hi, I'm Eric Grundhauser from Atlas Obscura) for a night of wondrous, weird, over-excited discovery. During this hour-long, monthly online show, we'll follow Tyler down the rabbit hole of whatever fascinating thing he's been noodling on recently, telling stories, talking to guests, playing games, and generally leaving a trail of edutainment in our wake. The streets will run red... with curiosity!

For this Halloweek edition of the Wonder Hour, we're going to be delving into caves! Dark, hidden, and often scary, caves are like nature's haunted houses. But how do we even find them? And what happens when we do? Tyler knows. Tyler found a new cave, and he's going to share stories of his cave hunt, and some of the eerie stories of cave discovery throughout history.

About Your Host

With an undying love for nature and its respective curiosities, there are few things Tyler’s brain isn’t obsessing over. Between his pursuits to crystallize the world, opalize everything, and hunt down some of the realm’s most unique plants, his passion to combine art and science every step of the way is his fire and fuel.

Chances are if you catch Tyler at a party, he’ll talk your ear off about exploring caves, growing minerals in his lab, playing Dungeons and Dragons, hybridizing new plants, electronic music, grappling with and overcoming trauma, and just how amazingly beautiful and mysterious this whole wide universe is.
