Atlas Obscura seeks a talented digital editor to join our growing team, with a particular focus on helping us expand our international coverage.

As a lifestyle publication geared toward off-beat travel and exploration, Atlas Obscura's editorial work is defined by our pursuit of stories with deep connections to specific places. Our journalism often touches on history, science, geography—really any subject that’s filled with wonder and surprise, plus that strong sense of place. This senior editor will be tasked with helping to improve the geographic diversity of our coverage. Do you have a wealth of experience working with freelance writers all over the globe—whether in traditional travel, foreign affairs, business, or science—but long to try something different, even unusual? This might be the job for you. 

You’ll edit everything from short daily articles to deeply reported long-form feature stories, and collaborate on a wide range of current and upcoming initiatives, including special packages, video series, trips and events, and more. This role will be based in our offices in Brooklyn, New York. 

Responsibilities Include:
  • Developing, assigning, and editing articles that distinguish Atlas Obscura’s journalism.
  • Recruiting and commissioning international freelance writers.
  • Managing budgets. 
  • Managing special projects. 
  • Working closely with senior editorial staff on long-term planning. 
  • Other editing and/or managerial responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:
  • A minimum of five years of experience in digital journalism, with at least two years of editing experience. 
  • Outstanding instincts for what makes a great web story. 
  • Top-notch story editing skills, from pre-draft coaching to line edits. 
  • Highly detail-oriented and organized.
  • Passion for Atlas Obscura’s mission of instilling a sense of wonder about the world in our audience.
