Albergo della Povere
The facade of this building only gives a hint of what is inside.
Built as a refuge for disabled orphans in the 18th century.
During construction sepulchres from the Punic and Pheonician periods were discovered.
it was later converted to a women only hostal. It became a sort of workhouse slightly later when weaving equipment was installed. The rather tired facade is no indication of the fantastic architectural features within the interior all of which seems far too elaborate for its original function.
There are cloisters overlooking attractive courtyards on either side. One of these currently houses temporary art exhibitions.
In the latter years of operations it was overseen by the Church of the Holy Trinity but management changed several times during its active life starting from its inception under Ferdinando Francesco Gravina, Prince of Palagonia. An institute dedicated to the history of the Prince’s works now runs the building.
