America's First Lager
This is the location where John Wagner used top-fermenting lager yeast obtained from monks in Europe, to create Americas first German-style lager beer.
Historic Marker Eli Pousson
The first lager in America was brewed on this spot in 1840. Currently, it’s a residential street, but if you’ve got worked up a thirst, Ortlieb’s Lounge is around the corner. This bar used to be attached to the last surviving brewery in the Northern Liberties, but sadly the building was demolished in 2012.
