Bert Parks Singing Statue
A bronze statue offering you a crown, sings to you if you put your head under it.
In a small garden just beside the Atlantic City Rail Terminal is a statue dedicated to the perennial host of the Miss America competition, Bert Parks. It’s a pretty terrible likeness, but the pose is interesting - he’s holding out the Miss America crown so you can stand underneath as though it’s your coronation. This is when the magic happens. When you take part in the pose, the crowning song “There she is…” begins to play from speakers hidden in the stones.
The statue was removed for renovation in 2013 after becoming loose on his plinth. The mechanics have now been replaced by a digital solution. Bert 2.0 should be singing to visitors for many years to come.
Know Before You Go
In front of the entrance to the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center Hotel in the little roundabout. Also, if you go into the hotel, below the large circular stairwell is a collection Miss America dresses from history. Up the circular staircase is a wall of shoes worn in the Miss America parade. Some are amazing, some are startlingly amateurish.
