Carrer Sant Roc is a  short street but it provides access to some of the best of the products of both the town of Bocairent, Spain, and the wider Sierra Mariola area. On opposite sides of the street are two excellent purveyors of local wines, cheeses and specialist products and at the junction between Carrer Sant Roc and Av d’Espanya is the municipal market which also houses stalls which provide local products. Of the local products on offer two stand out as being specifically local but even these are simply local variations of products that are found across this mountainous region. The first of these is the liqueur known as Herbero. It is a distillation based on herbs that can be gathered in the surrounding mountains and even between local producers there are distinctive flavour differences. The second is a combination of salted cod and dried peppers and tomatoes in olive oil, known as Pericana of which the Bocairent variety is distinctive and highly prized. Pericana, a cross between a salsa and a salad, is commonly served as a tapas dish ( with the local bread) within the town and is delicious. The largest of the outlets at Sant Roc is called Productos De Bocairent. It is not clear how they are related to the company “53 Covettes” (named for the 53 Moorish caves for which the town is famous) whose products seem to dominate the establishment. 53 Covettes products are actually available widely in the Alicante region (even at gas stations) but this shop has a very wide range of 53 Covettes goods ( but certainly not exclusively) including the famous Pericana. These establishments sell a wide range of food and drink of an artisanal origin of which claims as to quality are not held back on. Several places can sell you “the best cheese in the world”. However their claims to high quality is not without justification and, for a chance to buy real products from Sierra Mariola, Carrer Sant Roc is the street to come to. At these stores you will also see local non-food artisanal products such as basket ware and woven blankets.

Know Before You Go

If you are just coming to the shops here the best place for parking is Av. d'Espanya. Typically at 10.15 am there may be 2 or 3 empty spaces. If the street is full try parking near the historic bull ring.
