Catstair Canyon Cars
1960’s cars stacked up holding the highway, or so that was the original intention
A few miles from House Rock Road there is a 2 miles cute slot canyon called CatStairs Canyon. You can enter it on both ends. The canyon runs almost parallel to highway 89 and it’s 2 miles round trip.
What’s unique about it is the piles of old cars that were put in there “to hold” the road. Apparently, the idea failed miserably but the cars were left there.
Stacked old cars from the 1960’s were put in there, then covered with dirt to hold up the highway. Engineering genius? Well, maybe not. As one can imagine, they did not hold up, but they were left there and today they make a fun hike and photo op
How to get there: the drive along route 89 from Page to Kanab has an insane amount of things to do. About one mile from the intersection with House Rock Valley Road, there is a small dirt parking lot that allows the West entrance to the canyon. This entrance steps away from the 2 big piles of cars.
The East entrance is just 2 miles farther East and it’s a flat walk thru the wash until you get to the slot canyon and then the cars.
Know Before You Go
Easy hike. A little sandy and a little scramble. Free parking on both ends. Usually nobody there.
