Centrale Montemartini – Roma, Italy - Atlas Obscura

Opened in 1890s, Centrale Montemartini is in its own right a monument, exemplifying the beauty of the modernist industrial architecture. The use of this power station was phased out gradually during the 1960s, and the buildings lied in a state of semi-abandonment for decades. In the 1997, Centrale Montemartini was used as temporary accommodation for antique statues during the renovation of the Capitoline Museums. The stark contrast of the statues set against heavy machinery created a unique atmosphere that in a way surpassed the beauty of the statues. An exhibition was opened and it soon started gaining recognition. To date, Centrale Montemartining is being expanded, but still maintaining the same concept that underlies the whole exhibition.
