We stayed in Huaraz and took a day trip to visit this site in the Andes at over 10,000 feet. Once we passed through the tunnel, the road was mostly gravel and full of holes. Rounding a corner on our return, a man stopped us for a donation because his children were filling the holes.
These ancient sites are linked together from the mountains to the coast. Chauvin de Huantar has plazas, underground passages, and aqueducts. It was mostly used for ceremonies.
Know Before You Go
If you don't like big tour groups, it's easier to hire a car and driver/guide to get around. Local bus schedules are time consuming.
