Under the shadow of the impressive monasteries of Meteora, the small town of Kalabaka serves as a hub for several world-famous attractions and some interesting landmarks.
Situated on the highest and oldest part of the city, the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary originated sometime between the 4th and 5th-centuries and is the oldest still-standing building in the area. Most of the structure was later renovated and today’s appearance dates back to the 11th-century during the Byzantine rule.
The church features typical Byzantine wall paintings and a paleochristian pulpit. Also, it’s the only Orthodox church in the world with a free-standing pulpit.
