Drepung (founded 1416) is the largest Buddhist Monastery in Tibet. Sits just outside Lhasa where in houses around 300 monks. Most days these monks gather after lunch and hold 1 versus 1 ‘no holds barred’ discourses in a large courtyard . These vigorous debates. Inclusive of animated gesticulations. Raised voices. Feature subjects as varied as religious teachings, mathematics, history to meta-psychics & philosophy.
Know Before You Go
Visitors from outside China will be part of a tour group. Make sure your tour group coordinates the visit to the monastery to coincide with the debating session. When I was there. It was early afternoon.
