The 56-room Epperson House is a brick and mortar historic residence in Kansas City, Missouri. The house is no longer occupied and is located on the grounds of the University of Missouri Kansas City. Many windows are boarded-up, but one can still explore the grounds on foot and get a close up look at the outside of the house.
The building is notorious for its alleged hauntings and secret passageways, which earned it a spot on Unsolved Mysteries as one of the top five haunted houses in the United States. The architecture is beautiful and distinct with brick, stone, and Tudor half-timber façade embellished with tall leaded-glass windows, ornate masonry and an octagonal turret topped with a parapet. One gets the feeling when looking at the multitude of windows that something might appear at any time to look back at you. Decidedly creepy the closer one gets, even on a sunny day.
Know Before You Go
Best to visit on a Saturday or Sunday when classes are not in session for parking reasons. Visit the Museum of Toys and Miniatures (another Atlas Obscura destination), which is located right next door.
