Fire Island Lighthouse

The first Fire Island Lighthouse was built in 1826 and was 74-feet tall. The ring of stones from the original tower can still be seen. The current lighthouse was built around 1857, stands at 168-feet tall, and can be toured by visitors. If you happen to snag the right guide, you might get lucky and hear some of the stories that are not usually told on the tour.

These include stories of pirates capturing merchants ships, tales of hidden treasure, and the few ghosts who still preside over the lighthouse. A trip to the lighthouse is always worth it whether you see a ghost or not. The top of the tower offers an amazing view of the bay, ocean, and the entirety of Fire Island. Definitely worth the climb up the winding 182 steps.
