A cherished local landmark and point of directional reference.
Once a single bolder, it was most likely split in two by dynamite explosion in the 1950’s when the island’s roads were being paved. It was then know by locals as Split Rock. On June 6, 1971 in participation of Paint Night, a tradition where the senior high schoolers paint their names and graduation year on the roads in the middle of the night, two high school sweethearts painted the boulders to resemble an animated frog. To this day on Paint Night seniors freshen up the white paint of the frogs eyes while the rest of the body is maintained by the local community. Nearby hardware store Winslow Hardware even has Frog Rock Green in its paint database that is used to repaint the frog. In the early 2000’s a lady bug was painted next to the frog.
