Governor's Bridge
Also known as Crybaby Bridge, this metal span connects Prince George’s County and Anne Arundel County where they are split by the Patuxent River. It is infamous in local folklore as the final resting place of a young woman and her infant. According to the legend, she had been spurned by the father of the child after he learned that she was pregnant. A sympathetic aunt allowed her to stay in her home with the understanding that she was permitted to live there until the baby was born, but that she would need to make other living arrangements after delivering the baby. After she delivered the baby, she tried to seek help and shelter from her father, but he was incensed that she had not told him earlier, and even angrier about the scandal that would arise when it was discovered that his daughter has birthed a child out of wedlock. Crestfallen in the wake of being cast out by her father, she ran away and ended up at a nearby bridge. With no one else to turn to and seeing no way to improve her hopeless situation, she plunged off of the bridge into the river below, along with her infant child. Neither were ever seen again. Some say that cries of the baby can still be heard to this day.
