Help improve Atlas Obscura by expanding Haystack Rock with additional information or photos.
Haystack Rock is one of the most identifiable geological formations along the Oregon coast and a major tourist destination for those traveling along Highway 101. Roughly 200,000 people visit it each year. The rock was featured prominently as a background and a plot point in the 1985 film, The Goonies.
The rock and the areas are a protected marine habitat, so climbing the rock or touching wildlife near it is prohibited.
Know Before You Go
Cannon Beach is about 90 miles northwest of Portland. The best way is to take Route 26 West from Portland. It's clearly visible from almost everywhere in Cannon Beach; you can't miss it! A good approach is to turn west onto W Gower Ave and park, then walk down Ecola Court to the beach.
