Husby på Munsö
An iron age burial ground containing hundreds of viking burial mounds.
Lake Mälaren was once a hotspot for viking activity. Surrounded by various runestones, the Ramsund carving (link) and viking ship remains. Because of this, the islands guarding the entrance to the lake were of great strategic value. The island of Munsö was no exception to this and was in fact the alleged home of the Munsöätten. (Another name for the descendants of the famous Björn Ironside.)
Björn is seen as one of the legendary kings of Sweden and was popularized in the recent Vikings television series. His depiction there is not quite accurate, as he is said to have settled down in sweden and replaced the current royal family with his own for several generations.
Due to the importance of the island, it also became a popular burial ground, where the nations leaders and other high placed individuals were buried. The area contains dozens of burial mounds, with the biggest one allegedly belonging to Björn Ironside himself. (link to article)
Unlike most other burial mound areas in Sweden, this one is not maintained as well. Trees grow all over the area and save from one faded sign, there is nothing to indicate that this is a historical place. Therefore visitors will get a unique view into these ancient viking burial grounds.
Know Before You Go
The location is relatively straightforward to find with google maps. Just drive on until you see the Husby farm on the left, park the car and walk back up the hill. The area is fenced off with an electric fence that you will have to cross.
