Impeachment Tiles
An anonymous artist has affixed over 50 tiny rebus puzzle tiles throughout Philadelphia hidden in plain view.
A Philadelphia-area ceramic artist who works under the alias has been placing little rebuses around the Philadelphia area with a short, but topical message: “M (peach) him”.
The tiles appear to predate the impeachment trial of United States President Donald Trump, the apparent target of the tiles, which number over fifty and cover most of Philadelphia’s many neighborhoods (as well as one on the New York Metro). Almost all of the tiles are located curbside, though a few are at eye level. The tiles’ locations vary between City Hall, a beer garden, train stations, outside supermarkets, and on the Ben Franklin Parkway, with the same message on each. The message is a rebus consisting usually of three tiles (all orange on white): a capital letter ‘M’, a single peach, and the word ‘him’ in all lowercase. When read aloud, the tiles form a common rallying cry against the President, “Impeach Him”. The manufacturing and installation of the tiles has been ceased by the artist due to the subject’s acquittal, as the artist’s “job as your Philly street preacher has come rudely to an end” with the vote.
The tiles are frequently the victim of vandalism due to their politically-charged message, however, most of the damaged tiles have been repaired by the artist and their associates.
Know Before You Go
A list of some tile locations can be found on the artist's Instagram page (@mpeachhim), as well as pictures of construction and a tile scavenger hunt. Most of the tiles are on streets at curb level, so be watchful of traffic when visiting.
