Philip and Latifee Kiamie make their final resting place at the highest natural point in Brooklyn, Battle Hill in Green-Wood Cemetery, at 220 feet above sea level.
Before the area became New York City’s largest cemetery, this hill saw the Battle of Long Island unfold on its slopes. This was the first major battle fought after the Declaration of Independence was signed and the largest battle in terms of troops in the entire war (10,000 Continental troops versus 32,000 British Regulars and Hessians). After a week of fierce fighting, General Washington retreated over Manhattan through New Jersey and to Pennsylvania.
Today, Green-Wood Cemetery is much more peaceful, and near the Battle Hill Monument is the highest point in Kings County, which is known as the borough of Brooklyn. A square mausoleum crowns the highest ground. Philip and Latifee Kiamie now rest there, watching over the entire cemetery and all of Brooklyn.
