Leksands Knäckebröd AB
A massive Ikea-like shop that is completely dedicated to Knäckebröd
Knackebrod is one of the best known Swedish foods, one that has spread all across the world as a cracker like bread. The bread itself dates back all the way to around 500 AD, where it was a ‘poor man’s food’ for several centuries. All of this changed in 1817 when Anna Karlsdotter started a small bakery and shop in Leksand, selling the bread made after her grandmothers recepie.
The timing could not have been better, as the region was just opening to southern tourists who were shipped in via the old iron railway that now also serviced passenger trains. Small towns all around Falun started to get out of town visitors and business was booming.
The bread kept well and could be brought along on multi day travels, ideal for tourists. Slowly the bread started to shift from a poor man’s food to a welcome staple of the Swedish kitchen.
In 1929 Anna’s son Martin took over the bakery and started a new location that was strategically placed near a train station and had its own water supply. The company started to grow and grow, and now you can find their products in every Swedish supermarket and in many shops all across the world. Currently the 6th generation of the family is running the business. They are currently the second biggest knackebrod manufacturer in the world.
The old bakery started by Anna unfortunately burnt down long ago, and none of the old buildings remain, but instead a modern factory and shop can be found at the location. One part is a massive Ikea like warehouse that is stacked to the brim with knackebrod of all shapes, types and sizes. You can buy small packs for lunch or a giant box to help you through the winter. Besides that there are various alternative foods being sold, like meats and cheeses to go onto the bread and even pizzas with a knackebrod bottom.
Besides that there is a large gift shop, where various other items are sold. Ranging from pluche Dalarna horses to traditional Leksand clothing.
