Tiny artwork tucked within glass letterboxes form this hidden gem of an art gallery.

You won’t find any mail waiting within these mailboxes. Peer inside, and you’ll instead catch a glimpse of an ever-changing public art installation.

Mailbox Art Space (formerly Mailbox 141) is an alternative space that encourages artists to experiment and showcase new work (as long as it fits into the letterboxes, that is). Artists are invited to come up with an idea related to an exhibit’s given theme.

Whatever they come up with is then placed inside the glass-fronted letterboxes within the building’s foyer. The exhibitions change throughout the year, so you never know what you’ll come across. Getting a close look at the art tucked within the refurbished mailboxes feels like stumbling across a hidden gem.

As a bonus, the pint-sized gallery is located close to two of Melbourne’s other artistic attractions: AC/DC Lane and Hosier Lane, the city’s renowned street art area.
