The Marble Arch Inn was established in 1888, over 40 years after the Irish Potato Famine. The city of Manchester, like other major metropolises in England, had a large influx of immigrants from the Emerald Isle.

Unfortunately, quite a few Brits harbored a deeply held animosity toward the Irish settlers. As such, it was not uncommon for taverns to bar the Irish from entering their premises.

But the crafty day laborers soon took matters into their own hands and decided to build their own pub. Unbeknown to their owners and bosses, these workers were “borrowing” the materials they needed from various factories and rail yards to construct the ale house that stands today.

Upon entering barroom, you’ll soon notice the severe slope of the beautifully tiled floor. No one is sure why there’s such a drastic slant. There have been many theories as to why this is the case, from making it easier for patrons to get to the bar at the other side of the room to aiding rolling kegs along the floor.

Know Before You Go

The Marble Arch Inn is currently run by the Marble Brewing Company. The building itself was granted a Grade II status in 1998. The nearby brewing establishment supplies the bar with its various ales, lagers, and ciders. They also have a lunch and dinner menu, which includes a phenomenal assortment of cheeses. Their Sunday Roasts are very popular and one would be lucky to find an open table.

This is a public establishment with opening hours that vary. See its website for hours and to book a table.
