Market Master's House
Also known as Ship's Ballast House, the story of this early Bladensburg structure is shrouded in mystery.
Market Master’s House stands on Lot 38, a parcel of land purchased by prolific early developer Christopher Lowndes, on September 23, 1760. The house itself was built some time around 1765.
Tobacco was a big business interest in the nascent days of Bladensburg. Many believe this building - one of just four of the town’s original structures that are still extant - was the home or office of a local tobacco inspector.
It has also been suggested that the site may have been a storage space for ship’s ballast, as the house is constructed of non-native stone.
The adjacent Lot 37 was set aside for use as the Market Square, so it’s possible the building may have housed the overseer of said market. References exist that indicate that the post office may have operated out of the building, as well.

The building is still in very good condition and within walking distance of Bostwick (also built and owned by Christopher Lowndes) and Magruder Hilleary House.
