Have you ever wanted to see what the inside of a Native American shell mound looks like? You can at the Mound House in Ft. Myers Beach Florida. This site not only contains the oldest standing structure on Estero Island but the house was built on a Calusa shell mound. You can tour the house and then walk into a shell mound to see an open archaeological excavation and mound walls that are maintained by the town of Ft. Myers Beach.

The house is a little off the beaten path but GPS will take you right to the parking lot.
*NOTE-Damage from Hurricane Ian in 2022 the underground exhibit, Stories Beneath Our Feet, remains closed for repairs but the museum is open!
