Located next to the towering baroque cathedral of the city of Oviedo is a charming little art museum where the visitor can kill time by viewing magnificent art without spending a Euro.

Wandering the galleries the visitor will glimpse the works of some of Spain’s most iconic artists of the Modern period such as Pablo Picasso , Salvador Dali, Joan Miro and Joaquin Sorolla. However, it is the paintings in the gallery made by lesser known Asturian artists which make the greatest visual impression on the visitor.

These impressionist, post impressionist and social realist masterpieces capture both the rich and colourful culture and traditions  and their intrinsic connection to the surrounding landscape. Other more haunting works portray the sombre realities of 19th and early 20th century rural poverty, inequality and political oppression.

Indeed, some of the paintings almost seem prophetic as in the 1930’s these very social conditions would make Asturias one of the most staunchly loyal areas to the Republican  government and one of the most savagely attacked by Franco’s fascist troops during the Civil War. As such, this museum is a must see for anyone seeking to understand the social history and culture of this beguilling region of Spain.
