Nairobi National Park – Nairobi, Kenya - Atlas Obscura

Looking out from one side of the safari jeep is a large and vast Serengeti. Grasslands are far as the eye can see dotted with bushes, trees, and carved by dirt roads. Looking from the other side is a bustling city with a collection of skyscrapers towering over the horizon and glistening in the sun. It’s a location that lies in the intersection between humanity and nature, civilization and wilderness.

Founded in 1946, Nairobi National Park is one of the city’s most prominent features. Little over 45 square miles in size, it is relatively small compared to other national parks within Africa but still holds great distinction. Because it’s located within Nairobi city limits, the park is fairly easily accessible and multiple tour groups visit the location daily. Despite being next to one of Africa’s largest cities, the amount of wildlife that lives within the park is astonishing. Common animals one can expect to see during a trip includes zebras, antelopes, buffaloes, and gazelles. Some of the more uncommon and rare animals are giraffes, ostriches, jackals, rhinos, and lions. There is a lot to experience to say the least and it’s practically impossible to see all of the park’s sights and attractions within a single day.

If you are an animal lover and would love to go on an authentic safari while enjoying the comforts and amenities of a modern city, Nairobi National Park is waiting for you.
