In 2014 English Heritage, the official body for architectural conservation in England, produced a list of what it considered to be the top 10 most architecturally important railway stations in the country. Newcastle station came second behind Paddington in London and as such was judged to be both the top station outside the capital and the top non-terminus station in the country.
It was designed by John Dobson and opened in 1850.
The station is curved to account for direction of the Scotland and London bound lines which enter from east and south west respectively.
It was, along with Liverpool Lime Street, the first to make use of curved wrought iron arches and combined with the curve on the platforms this gives an effect on the interior which can only be described as beautiful.
