Nott Memorial
Is an iconic Victorian rotunda at Union College which serves as an exhibition facility & lecture space.
The Nott Memorial located at Union College in Schenectady will grab your eye, with it’s 16-sided stone-masonry architectural masterpiece. Built in 1858, this historical landmark is 110-feet tall and 89-feet wide and is dedicated to Eliphalet Nott, the first president of Union College and major leader of American education.
This centerpiece is awe-inspiring when entering the building, as it is completely open to the top of its dome 102-feet high. The dome consists of 709 small colored glass windows (aka illuminators). Along the lower portion is a band of red slates with a Hebrew inscription from the Talmud.
The 2nd floor is dedicated to the Mandeville Gallery, which offers exhibits of contemporary artists. The 3rd floor, holds Union College student’s work. What makes this art gallery unique is the mezzanine, which is open to the floors above and below. The mezzanine is composed of two semi-circular areas of viewing offering a unique art gallery perspective.
