Named by the artist “Big Lady” and officially called “The Beacon of Hope” this statue was created as a symbol of hope for the city of Belfast. The locals, however, prefer the nickname “Nuala with the Hula”. It can be found in Thanksgiving Square next to the River Lagan. The sculptor was Andy Scott who also created the famous “Kelpies”, horses heads, statue in Falkirk, Scotland. Apparently the artist only found out about the nickname when it was announced by the guide when he took a tour on the open top tourist bus which circulates the city.
Other nicknames include “The Belle on the Ball” and “The Thing with the Ring”.
This magnificent statue is 64 feet high, in stainless steel and cast bronze and is said to have cost £300,000.
It was constructed in 2007.
