Huge fortress on the hill above the over the Peloponnesian coastal city of Nafplio. Built by the Venetians in the early 18th century, it then passed hands from the Venetians to the Turks and then eventually to the Greeks. The fortress’s small cave prisons are a highlight and once held Greek Revolution hero Theodoros Kolokotronis. Parts of the scenic fortress are well restored, such as its church of Saint Andreas which is still in use. Other parts have been left largely alone and have become overgrown. The views from the top are magnificent: Nafplio and the Argolic gulf below, and the Peloponnese stretching outward.
