Pilot Mountain
Pilot Mountain offers an experience that is as unique as the mountain is majestic.
The state park area consists of multiple trail systems, canoe drop-in points, camping, and rappelling areas. The mountain stands 2,000 ft above sea level and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding areas including the Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont Valley, and Sauratown Mountains Range. For centuries Pilot Mountain has been used as a navigational tool and as a destination for travelers as well. It is listed as a central hub for the major ley-lines on the Eastern side of the United States so it is unique in that aspect as well.
Know Before You Go
The park at the summit overlook closes at 5:45 PM. You can drive to the overlook park from or you can hike a two mile trail that leads to the summit overlook. From the summit overlook park there is a .08 mile trail that loops around the pinnacle. Climbing on Pinnacle Rock is a misdemeanor but there are also areas where rappelling is allowed. The park is over capacity most weekends so plan in advance.
