Pimmit Barn
The last 20th Century Dairy Barn inside the Washington, D.C. beltway.
Lisle A. Smith erected this barn in 1937 as part of his third dairying operation in Fairfax County, Virginia, which ran for about 15 years on this property on Cherri Drive.
By 1951, land values had elevated to the point where dairy farming was no longer a practical economic use for the land, so Smith sold a significant portion of his holdings at a very low cost in order to avoid the tax hit.
Most of the surrounding area was developed for residential use, save for Pimmit Barn, which escaped rezoning for General Business District use by virtue of the fact that the streets were unlit and unpaved, and the houses were not connected to the public water and sewer system.
In 1960, the Fairfax County Water Authority took over the site and used the barn as a workshop for a number of years. In 1997, the property was transferred to the Fairfax County Park Authority who have leased it to McLean Youth Athletics for storage of sports equipment.
More recently, the barn and surrounding grounds have been utilized for all manner of events, including movie nights, seasonal festivals, and clean-up events to keep the barn and grounds in good shape.
