Site of the Poe Family Farmhouse
There are little tidbits of Poe history tucked away all over the city, and the Upper West Side is no exception.
It seems you’re hard-pressed to visit any East Coast city - or even any neighborhood in Manhattan, without finding some kind of hidden Edgar Allan Poe lore. The guy really got around!
The Upper West Side’s contribution to the writer’s storied history can be found on W. 84th Street in the form of a little plaque on a residential building. In 1844, the author lived in a farmhouse at this location, and it’s where he finished writing The Raven. Ironically, legend has it that he came to the site because he was fleeing inflated rent costs in the Washington Square Park area - which is still how many Upper West Siders are born to this day.
Two avian statues keep watch outside the site, which seem fittingly to be ravens. But then again, the building it called “Eagle Court” so maybe it’s just a coincidence. In any event, it’s a good spot to pop by to pay your respects to the macabre wordsmith.
