Qafa e Pazarit - Bazaar of Gjirokaster
Historic marketplace with Ottoman-era architecture located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Gjirokaster.
Situated at the base of the impressive Gjirokaster Castle, the Old Bazaar serves as the core of the old town within this UNESCO World Heritage site. Established in the 17th century, the bazaar has been an active marketplace for centuries demonstrating a classic Ottoman architectural influence. After a fire in the 19th century, it was rebuilt, using a consistent architectural style. The curving, cobblestone streets feature two and three-story Ottoman-era buildings.
Wandering through the maze of streets, visitors peruse shops selling authentic Albanian crafts, such as rugs, clothing, curtains, and carpets. Souvenirs like t-shirts and magnets are also available, allowing you to take home a piece of Gjirokaster’s Ottoman heritage. The bazaar is more than just a shopping area; it is a lively center where locals and tourists come together in cafes and restaurants, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and rich cultural heritage.
