About

The Red Dog Memorial in Paraburdoo, Western Australia, stands as a poignant tribute to a beloved canine icon whose legend has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Erected in honor of Red Dog, a charismatic and loyal Kelpie cross, the memorial commemorates his remarkable life and enduring legacy.

Red Dog's story began in the 1970s when he wandered into the mining town of Dampier, not far from Paraburdoo, and quickly endeared himself to the local community. Known for his friendly nature, intelligence, and remarkable ability to navigate the vast Pilbara region, Red Dog became a cherished companion for many residents, mine workers, and travelers passing through the area.

The memorial celebrates Red Dog's spirit and impact on the region. The life-sized bronze statue captures the beloved dog's iconic pose and friendly expression. The statue serves as a gathering place for visitors to pay their respects and reflect on the bond between humans and animals. The sculpture was designed and constructed by artists Joan Walsh-Smith and Charles Smith.
