Billy Romp and his family have been making the annual pilgrimage from snowy Vermont to the West Village for over three decades now. Since 1988, they’ve set up shop on the corner of Jane Street and 8th Avenue, living out of their camper on-site from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve.
They’re peddling much more than just evergreens, though. They have now become a fixture of holiday cheer in the neighborhood, and a tradition for many New Yorkers. Pay a visit to Billy and he’ll remember you by name for years to come. Manage to track down a now out of print copy of his memoir, “Christmas on Jane Street,” and he’ll sign it with a smile.
Romp’s grandchildren, affectionately known as the stand’s resident “elves,” will likely help you with your tree selection. The Romp Family tree lighting has become an annual highlight, as locals gather on the street corner for cider, baked goods, and music provided by anyone who happens to show up with an instrument. Forget Radio City, this is the most festive destination in New York when December rolls around.
