About

Rumbling Bridge is a remarkable two-tiered stone structure that crosses the River Devon in Scotland, the name of which is inspired by the rumbling sound of the river cascading through the dramatic gorge beneath.

The structure consists of two levels, with a lower bridge sitting underneath an upper arch. The initial lower bridge was built around 1713, and the upper bridge was added in 1816, due to the steep gradient down to cross the older bridge. It is unclear why the first arch was not removed in the construction of the second, but this adds to the site’s historical intrigue.

The gorge itself, carved by centuries of erosion, adds to the bridge’s mystique as well. At its narrowest, the water is barely visible but echoes loudly between the dark rocks. This natural phenomenon has made Rumbling Bridge a beloved spot for walkers and nature enthusiasts, with paths leading along the gorge offering views of lush vegetation, cascading falls, and precariously perched trees.

The bridge became a popular destination during the Victorian era, especially after the extension of the Kinross railway in 1863, which brought tourists eager to experience its charm. Today, Rumbling Bridge continues to attract visitors.
