If you are interested in learning how to grow vegetables and/or flowers organically this is the place to visit.

Ryton Organic Gardens is run by a charity called “Garden Organic” (previously called the Henry Doubleday Research Association).  The charity has as one of its main aims the encouragement of organic gardening and horticulture but it also undertakes internationally renowned research into organic pest control, composting, green manures and other aspects of organic horticulture and sustainability. At the Ryton Gardens centre there are numerous different gardens on a variety of themes but all having in common the fact that they have been developed using  organic principles. The entire site is a  pesticide and inorganic fertiliser free zone.

The site also offers courses led by world renowned experts in organic gardening.

The Ryton Organic Garden is also the site of collections of a variety of rare varieties of plants  including an internationally important collection of seeds that is vital to maintains the available genetic diversity in the plants which we regularly exploit.

 The research at Ryton has often been done in collaboration with Coventry University and recently the University’s Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience has established a presence on part of the site where amongst other things, it will be carrying out research into the biodiversity value of green roofs.

 

Know Before You Go

Plenty of free parking. On site is restaurant which serves organically grown food, much of which originates from the gardens themselves.

Ironically, for a place with such aims of sustainability, the site is difficult to reach by public transport. The nearest bus stop is about 1 mile away.
