Safe Harbor Petroglyphs: Big and Little Indian Rock
Ancient Native American rock carvings in the Susquehanna River. The Largest collection of petroglyphs found on the East Coast.
In the Susquehanna River near the Safe Harbor Dam in Lancaster County PA are Big and Little Indian Rock. They are partially submerged and showcase rock carvings or Petroglyphs created 1000 years ago or more! They pre-date the arrival of the Susquehannock Indians and it is believed an Algonquin tribe created them. Some believe that they are an ancient game migration map. The carvings depict animal tracks, animal and human figures, and thunderbirds. They were first studied in the 1930’s. At this location there is a visitor log and a petroglyphs site ethics card; as this is a sacred site and must be protected. It is only accessible by boat. They can be seen easier by using a sponge and water to highlight them (as anything else would harm the carvings). Please visit responsibly :)
Know Before You Go
The rocks are easier to see when there is less water being released by the dam.
