Shiregreen Working Mens Club
This former Sheffield working men's club advertised itself as "The Home of the Full Monty"
The concert hall of this traditional British working men ‘s club was used as the location for the final striptease scene in the much loved British comedy film, The Full Monty.
The film was based in Sheffield and several locations from the movie are still extant but only this working men’s club has really tried to embrace its link to the movie. In 1997 the club were paid only £600 for hosting the shoot but for many years announced the fact proudly on a sign outside the club.
It was here, in the movie, that a group of unemployed Sheffield men achieved their aim of making some easy additional cash by setting themselves up as a group of striptease artists prepared to “do the full monty”. As it turned out it was far from easy and to top it all their instruction to sell tickets to women only was ignored and the audience included numerous men from the neighbourhood including many of their previous work colleagues.
Whilst the final hilarious scene was filmed inside the club the exterior of the club was played by the dressed up entrance of a discount furniture warehouse nearby.
In 2017, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the movie, a group of 6 celebrities took part in a reality documentary TV series in which they were trained to perform “The Full Monty”. Their first performance of the act was recorded in front of a Sheffield audience at the Shiregreen Working Men’s Club. However, since that time the club has folded and moves have been made to demolish the building. This has been prevented so far by the local authority.
