Snail Alley – Taiwan - Atlas Obscura

Tucked down a quiet alleyway in the bustling West Central District of the city, there is a place to take it slow and enjoy some public art installations. All of which, are themed around snails.

Multiple 3D artworks and 2D renderings show snails of all types, reminding you to take your time as you amble through this peaceful tribute to a local writer. Yeh Shih Tao, to whom the nearby museum is dedicated, lived on this street before his death. In his book The Past is Like a Cloud he refers to a ‘Snail Street’ in the neighbourhood and it seems it has come to life. However, this real-life interpretation is more literal than simply accommodating life at a snail’s pace.

Along the alley, you will find sculptures, both bright and colourful, as well as subtle and almost hidden; murals;  and installations harkening back to a simpler time - all representing our favourite shell-bearing gastropods.

Take your time and explore the alley way, looking for all the hidden snails that have clambered up, over, and onto the walls around you.

Know Before You Go

Look for the strange handpainted bookcase on the street as a clue for where to enter the alleyway from the main road.
