Once a year this beach is taken over by giant insect-like mechanical beasts.

It is the Dutch artist Theo Jansen that is behind the creation of the kinetic sculptures called Strandbeests (beach beasts). Constructed out of plastic tubes used for electric installations nad powered by the wind they can once a year be seen walking along this beach outside of the Hague, navigating between sunbathers and other beachgoers in what he calls the Strandbeest Beach Sessions.

The sculptures have evolved since Jansen first started working on them in 1990 and he has even created a family tree based on their genealogy.

These beasts of the beaches should be experienced in their right environment. Not only do they move in an organic and almost insect-like way but the artist himself also stresses the sound they make.

Know Before You Go

Strandbeest Beach Sessions is held one a year. The wind has to be in the right direction, along the beach, and the right strength so the date and exact place is announced typically a day or two in advance. Make sure to be on the mailing list at the Strandbeest website [https://strandbeest.com/] to get the information.
